Gangneung Seongyojang is a historic residence that once belonged to the Yi family, a noble family of Gangneung. It is particularly known as the home of Yi I, a renowned Korean Neo-Confucian scholar, philosopher, and artist who played a significant role in Korean politics and ideology during the Joseon Dynasty. The villa complex comprises multiple buildings, gardens, and a lotus pond, all meticulously maintained to reflect its 16th-century origins. Today, it operates as a government-maintained tourist site, with portions of the original family still residing on the grounds. Visitors can explore the buildings, a small museum, and even book accommodations in a traditional guesthouse with meal service (reservations recommended).
