Balmerino Abbey

Balmerino Abbey was founded in 1229 by Cistercian monks from Melrose Abbey. Originally a self-sufficient community with a church, dormitory, and refectory, the abbey experienced a period of lax adherence to Cistercian rules in the 16th century. The Scottish Reformation in 1559 led to its abandonment, but parts of the structure survived due to conversion into a private residence around 1600. Today, visitors can explore the remaining ruins and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The grounds feature markers indicating the abbey's former layout, and a remarkably old sweet chestnut tree adds to the site's charm.
