About About the place

Whipsnade Tree Cathedral is a unique and moving memorial created after World War I. Designed as a living cathedral, it features trees planted in the layout of a traditional cathedral, including a nave, chancel, and chapels. While the design requires some imagination to fully appreciate, the site provides a serene space for contemplation, walks, and picnics. It’s often visited in conjunction with nearby attractions like Whipsnade Zoo and Dunstable Downs. The site’s natural setting and historical significance make it a popular destination for families, dog walkers, and those seeking a quiet retreat.

Best for

The Tree Cathedral is best suited for nature lovers, those seeking tranquility, families with older children, and individuals interested in historical memorials. It's also a good option for dog walkers.

Best season

Spring and autumn offer the most scenic beauty with changing foliage. Summer provides pleasant weather, but can be busier.

Best time to visit

Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends. Mid-morning or early afternoon offers the best light and fewer crowds.

Tips by Locals

Accessibility

Accessibility is limited due to uneven, muddy paths and potholes on the access road. While the site is generally open to all, those with mobility issues may find it challenging, especially after rain. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Kid friendly

The Tree Cathedral is suitable for children, offering space to run and explore. However, there are no specific play areas or facilities for children. Stroller access is limited due to the uneven terrain.

Pet friendly

Dogs are allowed on leads.

Food facilities/restaurants/cafes

There are no food facilities directly at the Tree Cathedral. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnics. Restrooms are limited and may require a visit to nearby Whipsnade Zoo or Dunstable Downs.

We went to this place which is amazing and we booked the entire suite for the family. Everybody had a great time and we really enjoyed our stay. The service and the staff was superb and we were able to indulge in their spa as well which was awesome. Must visit place for everybody.. The hotel was a nice place to stay and the best part here was the free wifi and free parking which is the hardest thing to find in this city. The hotel was well equipped and the staff was very professional. The rooms were big enough and it was a decent stay which also included breakfast.. Do visit this place and do enjoy it.

The cathedral is hundreds of years old and has a magnificent architecture. The murals and the walls are simply stunning. We got a chance to witness the prayer ceremony and it was divine. Do visit this place and do enjoy it.. We were so excited to visit this place but were thoroughly disappointed while reaching and looking at the mismanaged affair. The place was crowded with tourists and there was no system to arrange them. The staff was also very rude.
