Akkerman Fortress, located in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, is a formidable historical structure founded by Stephan II of Moldova. One of Ukraine's largest fortresses, it occupies a strategic position overlooking the Dneister estuary, with a perimeter exceeding one mile. The fortress has witnessed centuries of history, with influences from various cultures including Turkish, and features notable structures like the Kili gate and a minaret. Archaeological evidence suggests the site's history extends back to the 5th century B.C. with Greek settlements. While impressive in scale, the fortress benefits from ongoing maintenance and improved interpretive displays.
