The Istanbul Tunnel, officially known as Tünel, is the second-oldest surviving underground railway in the world, after the London Underground. Constructed in the 19th century and opened in 1875, it provides a swift two-minute journey between the Karaköy district on the European side of Istanbul and the Beyoğlu district, near Istiklal Street. Originally powered by steam, it now operates with electric trams. The tunnel serves as a practical solution for avoiding the steep climb between these two popular areas, and is a significant piece of Istanbul's transportation history.
The Istanbul Tunnel is ideal for tourists, shoppers, and anyone seeking a quick and convenient way to travel between Karaköy and Beyoğlu, particularly those who want to avoid the steep uphill walk. History buffs will also appreciate its significance.
Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather for exploring both Karaköy and Beyoğlu, making it a good time to utilize the tunnel.
Weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends. Mid-morning or late afternoon are generally less crowded than peak hours.
The stations may present challenges for those with mobility issues due to stairs and limited elevator access. The trams themselves are generally accessible, but boarding may require assistance. The historic nature of the stations limits modern accessibility features.
The tunnel is generally suitable for children, but strollers may be difficult to navigate in crowded stations. There are no specific kid-focused amenities.
Pets are generally not allowed on the tunnel.
There are no food facilities directly within the tunnel stations. However, numerous cafes, restaurants, and street food vendors are readily available at both the Karaköy and Beyoğlu ends of the line.
