Hobe Fort is a historical fortification situated on a hill above the Tamsui estuary. Constructed in the late 19th century, it bears a resemblance to European forts of the same period. The fort is notable for being the location of the only successful defense of Taiwan against a Western power – a victory by Chinese forces against the French during the Sino-French War. While offering interesting displays related to this conflict, the fort is somewhat remote and may not appeal to all visitors.
