Polovragi Cave, also known as Zamolxe’s Cave, is a Romanian cave system located in the Oltet Gorges. The cave is easily accessible and offers guided tours that reveal interesting formations and local folklore. The surrounding landscape is dramatic, with steep cliffs and a deep valley carved by a small river. While not as extensively decorated as some other caves, Polovragi holds historical and cultural significance, linked to the ancient Dacian god Zamolxis. The cave's temperature remains consistently cool, around 12-13°C, making it a refreshing escape. The upper level is accessible to the public, while lower levels are reserved for speleological exploration.
This attraction is best suited for those interested in geology, history, and natural beauty. It's a good option for families with older children and those who enjoy moderately active exploration.
Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather for both the cave visit and the surrounding hike.
Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. Morning or late afternoon are recommended to avoid potential crowds and enjoy the best light for photography.
The cave is generally accessible to people of all ages, but the floor is rocky and can be slippery. The path is not fully developed, and the ceiling lowers in some areas, potentially posing a challenge for those with mobility issues. Individuals using canes or walkers may find parts of the cave difficult to navigate.
The cave is suitable for children, but close supervision is recommended due to the uneven terrain. Stroller access is limited. There are no dedicated changing rooms or kid-specific activities within the cave itself.
Pets are not allowed inside the cave.
There are no food facilities directly at the cave entrance. Restrooms are available nearby, but facilities are basic.
The cave is one of the major highlights of this place and once we were inside the cave, it was above and beyond our expectations. The views are stunning and we were lucky to see the heavens light from far. The weather inside can be a little humid but the beauty of it makes it worth it. Must visit place.
The hotel was a nice place to stay and the best part here was the free wifi and free parking which is the hardest thing to find in this city. The hotel was well equipped and the staff was very professional. The rooms were big enough and it was a decent stay which also included breakfast.
This is an amazing place and a must see for all the visitors. It is adorned with beautiful interiors and historic walls. The stories of the past of this building are incredible and the view is just awesome.
