Cardo Maximus is the principal street of the ancient city, stretching approximately half a mile from the Forum to the North Gate. While some sections are better preserved than others, particularly those closer to the Forum, the road offers a compelling glimpse into Roman urban planning. The Cardo served as the city’s central thoroughfare, with numerous buildings lining its sides, and evidence of cart tracks remains visible on the original stones. Its construction dates back to the 1st century AD, showcasing the Romans’ renowned engineering skills. The Forum at the end of the Cardo is uniquely oval-shaped.
