Church of Saint Alexander Nevskiy

The Church of Saint Alexander Nevskiy is a Russian Orthodox church located in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem, very close to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Originally purchased by the Russian Royal family in the 19th century to serve as a hostel for pilgrims and potentially an embassy, the site underwent extensive excavations beginning in 1883. These excavations revealed remains dating back to the 4th century, including parts of the original Holy Sepulchre Church and the Judgement Gate, believed to be part of the ancient city walls used by Jesus. Today, the Alexander Compound houses the Alexander Nevsky Church and a neighboring Orthodox church. In early 2020, the Israeli government designated the Alexander Compound as the official residence of the Russian government in Jerusalem during President Putin’s visit.
