Umm Al-Qura Mosque, originally known as Umm Al-Maarik (Mother of all Battles) mosque, was constructed during the Iraqi ex-regime in the 1990s. It was intended to be one of the largest mosques in Iraq and the surrounding region, funded with substantial resources. While initially built as a place of worship, it now functions as the headquarters for several state religious departments. The mosque has undergone renovations since 2003, particularly following sectarian violence. Its design incorporates symbolic elements, including landscaping and a map outlined in water, and is distinguished by its dark blue domes. The surrounding area features a substantial concrete blast wall erected for security purposes.
