The Komotini Fortress represents the surviving fragments of a significant Byzantine fortification originally constructed in the 4th century by Emperor Theodosius. While much of the original structure was lost to destruction during the Ottoman period, portions of the walls remain visible throughout the city center. These ruins are scattered around Grigora Street, near the church on Sofouli Street, and behind Venizelou Street, particularly in the area of Xenofontos Street where the church museum is located. The site provides a tangible connection to Komotini’s past and offers a unique perspective on the city’s evolution.
