Monument to Gustav II Adolf

The Monument to Gustav II Adolf honors the Swedish king who established the University of Tartu in 1632. Originally erected in 1928 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, it was destroyed by the Soviet Union in 1950. Remarkably, it was rebuilt from snow by members of an academic men's choir during the Soviet era in 1988, symbolizing resistance and cultural preservation. The current monument is a 1992 restoration, a copy of the Gustav Adolf statue in Göteborg, Sweden, gifted by Uppsala University. It stands as a significant symbol of Tartu's history and its Swedish heritage.
