The Southern Mosque, also known as the Tartar Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Urumqi, dating back to between 1897 and 1919. Constructed with funds from the local Tartar community, it’s a significant religious and cultural site. The mosque is characterized by its predominantly green color scheme and intricate wood carvings and columns. It can accommodate over 1,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the city. While often confused with the Erdao Bridge Mosque located in the International Bazaar, the Southern Mosque offers a glimpse into the vibrant Muslim culture within Urumqi. It was undergoing renovations during some visits, limiting access to certain areas.
